Beach Cleaning Day - Negombo

The Green Practice Committee (GPC) of the Faculty of Medicine (FOM), University of Kelaniya (UOK), is organizing an evening of volunteerism to clean the plastic debris and the nurdles scattered on the Negombo Beach while building a sense of responsibility among the undergraduates at the FOM and the staff. We hope to strengthen the camaraderie between the students and among the staff and pave the way for better communication between the two through a team effort to reduce pollution.

We hope to donate the plastic waste collected to recycling centers and dispose of the other collected waste appropriately. This project aligns with the environmental policy adopted by the University of Kelaniya on 10th December 2014, becoming the first national Green University in Sri Lanka. Increasing awareness of responsible citizenship among the participants and the public and shed a focusing light on initiatives such as The Pearl protectors, who have been doing commendable work in making the environment safe for all is a parallel objective.

As a medical institute, we have been at the forefront of curative medicine and public health initiatives. We aim to set a benchmark in environmental health initiatives. The team participating will be trained in the process and be ready to be dispatched as a task force at an event like the Xpress pearl disaster; should such an unfortunate event recur. Strengthening the attitudes of social responsibility and volunteerism on the day before the volunteer day is celebrated globally will undoubtedly leave a memorable impression on these young and young at heart contributors. Main Sponsor of the event is Global Housing and Real Estate (Pvt) Ltd and Venue partner is Jetwing Hotels.
